“Hatsuhinode” refers to the first sunrise of the new year on January 1st when the sun rises above the horizon for the first time. The Japanese have a custom of greatly appreciating this sunrise.

Some say that this custom has existed since prehistoric times, but even without the history and background, the first sunrise of the year is a very refreshing experience. Some people drive along the coastline to witness the first sunrise at the easternmost tip of the country, while others relax and watch the sun rise over the horizon while soaking in a hot spring.

Others start the year by climbing Japan’s highest mountain, Mt. Fuji, and are rewarded with a spectacular view that dispels their fatigue. However, climbing the mountain to see the first sunrise is so popular that it attracts the longest queues in Japan for any mountain.

However, some people may consume excessive alcohol on New Year’s Eve to console themselves for the passing year, and end up waking up after the sun has already risen. On such occasions, it is not a bad idea to open the window and greet the new year with a heartfelt “Happy New Year” in the crisp, clear air.

The first sunrise each of us witnesses, regardless of our circumstances, is truly wonderful.
