Have you ever heard of Beer Gardens?
Hearing the name, you might think its drinking beer in a garden or park, but that’s not quite it. Beer Gardens are one of the highlights of summer in Japan.
In Japan, after work in the summer, it is common for office workers to descend upon beer gardens en masse to enjoy themselves before heading home.
Drinking outside is one of the key features of a beer garden. Although beer gardens are usually on the roof of a building, recently they are also held in the inner gardens or terraces of hotels.
It isn’t clear why it is so enjoyable to drink beer outdoors sweating in the heat of summer, but whatever the reason, beer gardens are all about drinking beer while feeling the hot summer breeze.
Most beer gardens have a buffet system offering all you can eat and drink in a two hour time limit.
The price tends to be around 5000 to 7000 yen.
Since it is a battle to eat and drink as much as you can in the time limit, many Japanese say it is not the right time to stop and enjoy the summer breeze. Still, beer gardens are popular events held every summer.
The real appeal of a beer garden is this: Since it is located on a rooftop, there is a great view, and a sense of openness, and since most of the guests are drinking and having lively conversation, it has a festive atmosphere.
When you come to Japan, you are sure to enjoy shopping at department stores and in commercial areas. But if you visit in Summer, be sure to check if there is a beer garden being held in the area.
Sushi and yakiniku are nice, but I also recommend enjoying the Japanese summer in a beer garden as you reflect on the experiences of your trip.
