The cafe: The perfect place to drink coffee or tea, read a book, work on your laptop, or listen to music.

But did you know in Japan, many cafes have a unique “theme”?

First, there is the “Maid Cafe”, which is the leading example of theme cafes. In this sort of theme cafe the female waitresses are maids and the customers are their masters.
When you enter the cafe, you are greeted with a warm “Okaerinasaimase, goshuujin-sama (“Welcome home, master.”).

All of the female staff members are dressed in maid uniforms and provide hospitality to their masters, the guests.
Recently, these places have become bustling hotspots often visited by foreign visitors.
People who would like to relax while reading books or listening to music no longer come here.

The next most typical themed cafe is the “animal cafe”. In this type of cafe you can relax by interacting with animals. There are a wide variety of animal cafes, from animals often seen as pets to more exotic animals only seen at zoos. Nobody comes here just for coffee.

Japan is full of a variety of other theme cafes. From footbath cafes, planetarium cafes, anime cafes, detective cafes, and more- With so many to choose from, there is sure to be one that is just right for you!
