In Japan, there are many “something something day” days.
In most cases, the day is decided by a play on words.
For example, World Cat Day is August 8th, but in Japan February 22nd is more famous as Cat Day.
In Japan, the sound of a cat’s cry is pronounced “nyan”, and 2 is pronounced as “ni”, so that February 22nd is similar to “nya nya nya”, a cat meowing three times. For this reason, it was made Cat Day.
Now, the title of this article is 11/22, which has actually been designated as “Good Couple Day.”
This is another play on words, and very familiar to most Japanese people. Many couples register their marriage on this day.
However, nothing special or wonderful happens throughout the city on this day. It is not as lively as it is on other romantic occasions like Christmas and Valentines seasons.
Before, I thought- Why can’t we make this day a bit more exciting?
But then I realized- Isn’t it most appropriate as a day to thank your partner who supports you in daily life without any special events?
Even if it is a day that has only a modest celebration, it is a day that can leave a lot of warmth in your heart.
If you find yourself spending November 22nd in Japan, why not use it as a chance to express your gratitude for your partner? And to make their everyday life a little more special, it would be nice if you could send them a gift or enjoy a nice dinner together.
