In the fall, the beautiful fall foilage of colored leaves can be enjoyed all throughout Japan. The best season for the fall leaves starts from the end of September into October in the Hokkaido and Tohoku regions, and from October to December reaches its peak from Kanto to Kansai and Shikoku, while in the Kyushu season the fall colors can be enjoyed from November to December. Fall foilage in other countries can be on a large scale and worth a view, the gradation of red, orange, yellow and various other colors is magnificent. But fall leaves are not just for observation. In Nara, where I live, there is a specialty known as “Kakinoha Sushi” that is eaten year round. Usually, it is vinegar-marinated fish such as salmon or rice wrapped in green persimmon leaves, but for a short period of time during the fall foilage season red and yellow leaves are used, with an impact so beautiful you can’t help remarking on it when you first open the box. It can be eaten as a snack without getting your hands dirty, and persimmon leaves also have an antibacterial effect, making them ideal to take with you to sit on a bench and enjoy the fall scenery. I would like you to take the opportunity to experience this limited-time impression if you come to visit Japan during the fall foilage season.
