“Kawadoko”, raised platforms near the bank of a river, are often found in areas where rivers flow. You can enjoy visiting one from around May to October in various places like Kamogawa, Kibune, and Takao in Kyoto.
The city of Kyoto is located in a basin, and in the summer it gets extremely hot and humid.
In search of a moment of coolness and relief, set up tatami by the river bank and enjoy a relaxing time. There, you can enjoy dishes like Kyoto vegetables and sweetfish. To indulge in a banquet on the riverbank to try and forget the sweltering heat even if just for a moment- this is wisdom handed down from people in times before air conditioning.
When you see the various kawadoko aligned alongside the Kamo river, it really feels like the hot summer has arrived. Kawadoko are also wonderful to enjoy at night. It is a pleasure to enjoy a feast while looking upon the illuminated river. The orange light playing upon the surface of the water is very beautiful.
Also, Kifune and Takao, located in the mountains, are much cooler than Kyoto itself. The tatami area is so close to the surface of the water that you can reach out and touch it with your hand, and you can directly experience the murmuring of the river and the greenery of the mountains firsthand.
Kawadoko, where you can relax while being soothed by nature, offer a different atmosphere than the bustling city of Kyoto itself.
It’s something I would love for tourists to experience.
After walking around seeing the various sights, it could be a good way to take a break and soothe the weariness of your journey.
