In Japan, there are various ‘kinds’ of autumns.
For example, there is the autumn of appetite, the autumn of sports, the autumn of art, and the autumn of reading.
October 27th is known as Reading Day in Japan.
With the intense heat of summer finally over and cool fall weather finally upon us, it is a time when it is easier to concentrate on things.
This makes it the perfect season for reading books.
Reading Day was first held in 1947 by a group of publishers, book stores, and other organizations. Reading Week runs from October 27th to November 9th. To coincide with this period, many bookstores offer special in-store events like “100 books recommended by the store!”
It is a good time of year to reread an old masterpiece or take a look at a new book and take a peek into the world of new authors.
As you read, you can lose yourself in the adventure of the imaginary world that unfolds in your mind.
It would be nice to stop by a bookstore during this period. Sometimes there are special editions of books that can only be seen at that time. Even with a language barrier, a beautifully bound book is great for interior decoration.
Of course, there are many written worlds I’d like people to actually read, and not just display. Be sure to ask the store staff for recommendations, or if they have any translated works available.
With sightseeing, food, and shopping, there are many things to enjoy during travel, though it would be even nicer to not just enjoy these experiences during your time in Japan, but also to get a feel for the culture and environment of the country as it is written in its literature.
It will surely add depth to the enjoyment of your trip.
