Sushi is probably one of the foods most foreign tourists look forward to eating on their trips to Japan.

Whether it is experiencing the atmosphere of a luxury sushi restaurant or trying out conveyor belt sushi, there are many ways to enjoy it.
Did you know there is actually an order in which to eat sushi to make it more delicious?
Essentially, you start with lighter flavored sushi and work your way to stronger tastes.
Of course, that doesn’t mean you necessarily have to obey this rule of thumb, but knowing about it is something you can brag about to your friends, so by all means means try working it into one of your episodes in Japan.
For this order, the first thing you eat is white fish. Fish with white meat such as sea bream and flounder have a mild taste, so eating them first with a clean palate helps in enjoying them to the fullest.
Next is the slightly stronger flavored fish with orange or reddish meat, such as tuna. Around this time you can also enjoy “Hikarimono”, such as horse mackerel or sardines with vinegar. After this, you can once again eat lighter sushi such as squid or octopus, eat shrimp or shellfish, before moving on to strong-tasting sushi like sea urchin.
Finally, finish your meal with something refreshing like cucumber or pickled vegetable sushi.
This is a basic guide for the order in which to eat sushi.
But of course, the most important thing is to eat your favorite sushi in the order you’d like. If you go to a sushi restaurant, you’ll notice that Japanese people also order whatever they like in any order.
So feel free to eat whatever you’d like at the restaurant, and save these rules for sushi for bragging to your friends once you get back home.
